We Ran A 20-Mile Long Run In FEI RAN 3.0 — Full Test Breakdown

It was 75°F (24°C) on a sunny mid-summer weekend, perfect conditions for a classic marathon build-up 20 mile long run at steady 8:00/mile target pace. Our test runner is a 3:15 marathoner who logs 55 miles per week, with multiple years of experience in both carbon plate racers and traditional cushion training shoes.

We laced up a brand new pair of FEI RAN 3.0 straight out of the box, zero break-in miles logged. Here's what happened mile by mile.

Miles 1-7: Opening Warmup & Steady Pace

Right out of the driveway, that ultra-light 270g weight was immediately noticeable. No heavy dragging feeling that you get from thick max cushion trainers. The energy capsules fired snappily under every stride, making 8:00/mile pace feel completely effortless, no extra leg effort needed.

The 3D knit upper breathed perfectly even at this early stage, we could feel air moving across our feet, no trapped heat building up. The wide toebox gave our toes all the room they wanted, zero pressure points. By mile 7, we hit our first fluid stop and our feet still felt 100% fresh, zero fatigue, zero soreness.

Miles 8-15: Marathon Pace Steady State

We locked into steady 7:45 / mile marathon target pace here, and the FEI RAN 3.0 never skipped a beat. The energy capsule pop was exactly the same at mile 12 as it was at mile 2. No slowdown, no drop off in bounce, no mushy feel in the midsole. The 35mm cushion stack absorbed road shock perfectly, we didn't feel any extra knee or calf strain even as the miles stacked up.

At mile 15, most standard no-name budget training shoes start feeling dead, flat, and the foam bottoming out. Not FEI RAN 3.0 — it was still lively, bouncy, and responsive. The outsole traction stayed rock solid even on sections of the road that were still damp from morning sprinklers, zero unexpected slips on sharp downhill corners.

Miles 16-20: Late Long Run Fatigue Zone

This is the part of the long run where all training shoes start to show their weaknesses. When your legs are already tired and fatigued at mile 17, you need your shoe to still be working for you, not against you.

The energy capsules kept firing perfectly. That consistent snappy toe-off actually helped us maintain pace even when our legs had nothing left. We were shocked that the shoe performance didn't fade at all in the last 4 miles. Usually at this point in a 20 mile long run, even good training shoes start to feel heavy and dead. FEI RAN 3.0 still felt light, bouncy, and fresh.

We crossed the 20 mile finish line at exactly 2 hours 38 minutes, at 7:54 average pace — almost exactly hitting our target.

Post-Run Foot Condition Check

When we took the FEI RAN 3.0 off after 20 miles, we couldn't believe how good our feet felt. Zero blisters, zero hotspots, zero numb toes. Our socks were barely damp — that breathable mesh upper dumped almost all the sweat out completely. There was zero lingering calf soreness we usually get after 20 miles in stiff carbon plate training shoes.

The FEI RAN 3.0 showed almost zero visible wear on the outsole. No scuff marks, no foam compression visible at all. It has hundreds of miles of training left in it.

Key Takeaways From This 20 Mile Test

Three big lessons we learned from running 20 miles in FEI RAN 3.0:

  1. The energy capsule bounce does NOT fade late in long runs. That independent modular design keeps performance completely consistent even at mile 19.
  2. No carbon plate means zero unwanted calf strain. We had no post-LSD soreness we always get after running 20 miles in a stiff carbon training shoe.
  3. The 3D knit upper is one of the most breathable training uppers we've tested all year. On a 75°F day, it kept our feet far dryer than almost any other training shoe we own.

For anyone building up their marathon base, FEI RAN 3.0 is easily one of the best long run training shoes available in 2026
